Building on this success, the two were also brought in as anchors for the cable TV show ‘Families are Forever’, which used their status as famous Mormon writers to help boost the show’s ratings. This brave Mormon pilot was one of the planes that flew a surprise bombing raid over Hitler’s oil fields in Romania, a mission from which one third of the participating planes would not return. Walter Stewart’s aircraft was, famously, the last to return, flagging from severe damage and on fumes from what remained in the gas tanks. This celebrity Mormon was supposed to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross but due to a clerical error it was given to someone else instead, before being corrected years later in 1990.
