Few people can claim to have left a legacy that has already saved millions of lives and will continue to save millions more. R. Adams Cowley is the famous Mormon doctor who paved the way for Emergency Medicine and Shock Trauma with his contributions to emergency medical services including open-heart surgery; a complex procedure that has saved countless lives.

This incredibly famous Mormon celebrity passed away in 1991, at the age of 74. In his lifetime he opened the first Trauma Centre for America, based in the University of Maryland. Among his work was the ‘Golden Hour’ concept which laid the groundwork for logistics in emergency care including fast transport such as the use of helicopters to quickly and safely move injured and sick people.
